Group Activity #1-Preschool Cleanup and Move
The preschool rooms in the old high school flooded this winter after water pipes froze and broke. A lot of the materials, such as books, were ruined and had to be documented. We were asked to write down the book names and titles that were ruined to be turned in for replacement. Our main job was to transfer all of the toys, books, and other materials to the church and organize them. Education is very important, and this flood destroyed many things that were crucial to the children's learning. The thing I enjoyed most about this project was playing hide and seek in the church with my classmates. I really treasure these bonding moments with my class, as I know they are drawing to an end. This activity made me consider teaching as a profession, even though I didn’t actually work with kids at all. |
Group Activity #2-Chisholm
Trail Cleanup At the beginning of May, my class and I were asked to help clean up the the town in preparation for the Chisholm Trail Festival. We worked mostly on Main Street, where most of the event takes place. We cleaned the Opera House, including dusting and sweeping. A few other girls and I also cleaned ‘The Roost,’ which consisted of lots of sweeping. Another area we cleaned was the gazebo. Basically the whole class teamed up for this, as there were tons of leaves to be raked and disposed of. After this activity, I learned just how much time and effort goes into putting on some of the events my small town has every year. I really enjoyed looking around The Roost and also learning some new history about Caldwell that I didn’t know. This activity encouraged me to give more thanks to the people who volunteer so much time to events like the Chisholm Trail. |

Group Activity #3-Wellness Night
Wellness Night is an event that the school puts on every year for Pre-K-5 students in the attempt to promote healthy exercise habits and healthy eating. The seniors were in charge of planning and organizing the event this year. We decided to have four different activity stations with games, along with a healthy snack in between. The games included a type of dodgeball, just dance, hula hoop rock-paper-scissors race, and various parachute games. All of these activities involved lots of moving and required the kids to be very active. After helping plan and run Wellness Night, I learned how much kids look up to us high schoolers. They really just want to be around us and be like us. My favorite part was simply getting to talk to the children and get to spend time with them. My least favorite part was the stress that came along with trying to orchestrate the event. Wellness Night made me realize how fun and influential children can be. Hopefully one day I will work with children and get to spend time with them more often. |
Individual Activity #1-B.Q.C. Pancake Feed
The first individual event I chose to volunteer for was the Border Queen Cruisers Pancake Feed. The club hosted this event on groundhog day as a fundraiser. The members cooked pancakes and sausage to serve. My job was to serve drinks and help get any other condiments or things people may need. After a table cleared, I would wipe it down and make sure it was clean before more people sat down. Following the event, my other classmates who volunteered and I cleaned everything up. This consisted of gathering up the unused materials, cleaning the kitchen and taking out the trash. From this experience, I learned how much it really takes to put on an event like this. I think I’ve definitely taken small town gatherings like the pancake feed for granted. The thing I enjoyed the most about this was talking with all the adults who were also helping. My least favorite thing was probably taking out the trash. This activity impacted my life in a big way. I realized how involved I want to be in my community. In the future, I really do want to be a part of events like this. |

Individual Activity #2-Middle School Track Meet Concession Stand
At the concession stand, I prepared food, served food and drinks, took orders, took money and calculated change, and cleaned up. This was a middle school track meet so there was a ton of little kids coming up over and over getting snack after snack. From this experience, I learned how time consuming setting up and tearing down a big event like this. The thing I enjoyed the most was the little kids who came up to get food. They always have jokes or something funny to say. This activity made me realize how much influence I have on little kids. They look up to me, and that’s a little crazy to me. |
Individual Activity #3-B.Q.C. Pile on Dinner
The Pile On Dinner was a taco/nacho bar that the Border Queen Cruisers hosted as a fundraiser. It took place at the new fair building on June 6th. The first thing I did was arrive early to set up tables and chairs, as well as help finish preparing and setting out all of the food. At this event, I served people water and tea. I also helped replenish all of the taco condiments. After the dinner was over, I helped the members tear down the tables and chairs, helped put all the food away, and helped do dishes. After this dinner, I learned how much money people from my community donate to organizations like the Border Queen Cruisers. We’re very blessed to have such a supporting community in Caldwell. This event influenced me to want to be more involved in my community now, and in the future. |

Individual Activity #4-Blood Drive
At the blood drive, I helped the Red Cross workers set up the beds and all of their other equipment. Then, I assisted in making sandwiches and setting out snacks for the patients. Throughout the blood drive, I did a little bit of everything. Whether it was escorting patients to the tables, making sandwiches, serving drinks, or helping at the registration table; I was always on my feet. After the drive, the rest of the volunteers and I helped the Red Cross workers clean up their equipment and load it up in their vans. Then, we wrapped it up by cleaning up the kitchen. Following the blood drive, I learned just how hard it is to get people to take time out of their day to donate blood. I enjoyed spending time with some of my friends, while also volunteering for a good cause. This activity impacted me in a positive way. It really made me want to donate at the next blood drive. In the future, I plan to donate as much as possible. |
Individual Activity #5-Vacation Bible School
Vacation Bible School is a five day long “camp” for children grades Pre-K-5. The churches in Caldwell put this on every year and rotate between churches to determine who is in charge. At VBS, there are various different activities for the kids to do. They do crafts, play games, learn songs, and have a bible study each day. The crafts and games always relate to the story of the day. The songs and dances are learned so they children can perform what they’ve learned at church Sunday morning. My job was to stay with the kindergarten and first grade group. I also had help from Kelsey Weems, Stephanie McCormick, and Megg Lebeda. We even participated in the songs and dances with the children to motivate them. From Vacation Bible School, I learned some Bible stories that I didn’t know. The most enjoyable part was definitely spending so much time with the children. VBS impacted my life in a very positive way. I definitely want to take part in Vacation Bible School in the future. |
